But, if you're anything like me, you've got a big dream and a whole heap of goals. So when the Blurhg Monster comes a-knocking, you're 23% looking for the chocolate and the remote, and 77% thinking "Ain't nobody got time for that".
So maybe you drag yo butt out of bed and start plodding around. Chances are you pick up something to do, put it down and half do something else. Then the Blurhg Monster's friends start to show up - Anxiety Beast and Guilt Fiend.
Oh you know there are things to do. But .... BLURHG!!
On those days it is really important to write a to-do list. But there are special tricks for Blurhg Day To-Do Lists that I want to share with you that will help on those days.
On a day like that, the first two things you write on your to-do list need to be things you've already done. It doesn't matter if they are tiny - "Get out of Bed" and "Have a Shower". It doesn't matter what they are, so long as you have already done them.
Then write down the rest of the list of things you need to do that day.
And really think about it - what things can't wait? Keep the list short, and the only things on it are
- those that will keep you up tonight if you don't get them done;
- those which will give the Blurgh Monster more power tomorrow;
- those you have made an unbreakable commitment to another to do; and
- those that will set you further away from your dream if they are not completed.
This isn't about procratinating, this is about taking care of yourself on the days when it would be so much easier to just pull up the covers and hide.
Half way down the page in big capital letters write: TOMORROW and put a big fat line underneath it, and then write everything else.
It is unlikely your children will go to school tomorrow naked if you don't do the laundry. Chances are no one but you will notice if you leave the vacuuming for a day. And your mother will still love you if you call her on the weekend ;)
If you give yourself today, then you will be able to do amazing things tomorrow.
You might also find that when you write yourself a short list for today, you will get so inspired by how quickly you get through it, that you want to start on some of the things from the tomorrow list.
But the whole time knowing - that's bonus. You're making gravy, baby!
The point of the short list is - it's not scary. And when you're not feeling up for a power-filled day, you just need to support yourself in getting started.
Getting started is the hardest part - the magic of a Blurhg Day To Do List is by the time you've finished writing it, you're already half way through it! How's that for motivation!!
Finally, just a quick note about your Big Dream. Your Goals (because we know the matra: a Goal is a Dream with a Plan!!).
There is a really important difference between goals and your to-do list. Your to-do list are those things you have to do, know you will do, and need to do. Your goals will stretch you. They ought to be a little bit of a reach for you.
Your Goals are reached by completing tasks on your to-do list, certainly. Those tasks do not all have to be created equal. Find a little one, and do that.
Goals are not there for you to beat yourself up with. If you are having a blurhg day, then look at what is one small step I can do today that will bring me closer to my goal?
The power of taking that step towards your goal, even a tiny little baby step, is HUGE! In my experience, it can be Blurhg Monster swayingly huge!
Rainbows, puppy-dogs and a loving "piss off" to your Blurhg Monster,
